Exposing the ground breaking work of Magnum Photographers for a mainstream audience to discover online

We worked with Magnum Photos to design and launch a new, exciting site, bringing the ground breaking work of the Magnum photographers to a more diversified audience.

While the original media-licensing platform remains for professional use, the new platform aims to assert Magnum Photos as the authoritative destination for photo journalism for a mainstream audience. Delivering continuous, relevant, and beautiful content,  the new site enhances accessibility and user engagement, and allows Magnum to promotes events, exhibitions, workshop as well as direct to the online shop, boosting revenues.

Smart and minimal
Magnum Photos is all about celebrating the work of the photographers. A clean,  spacious and pared-down design direction for the website gives strength to the photographic content, allowing it to remain the main focus.

We selected 2 fonts with little ego: Fira Sans Regular and Bold, a condensed and quiet sans serif font used for headlines, paired with a classic Garamond, giving an editorial feel, for the body of articles.

Discovering content
The content available on Magnum Photos, both current and archived work, is incredibly diverse and overwhelmingly prolific.

The journey on the new site is one of discovery. The main homepage and all listing pages start with featured content at the top, giving readers a point of entry to start their exploration, and end with a reverse chronological feed that can be filtered to narrow the results.

The new platform aims at delivering it in a digestable, relevant, and educational way: photographic stories are editorialised, grouped into themes, organised within categories, tagged to optimise searchability, and highlighted at chosen times.

A modular tool
The articles are built in a modular way, allowing the layout to be content-led. Images components tend to be large, allowing photography to be very present. It includes 1 and 2 columns modules, as well as the option to relate a product or a different story.

Multi-function image mode
The image mode allows to view the images isolated from the text, on a white background, in full (the image resizes to the size of the user’s browser window). Within the image mode, users also find a link to the photographer's profile, products related to each specific image if relevant, as well as image tags to jump off to related stories and images.

Magnum events
Giving Magnum the space to promote exhibitions involving Magnum Photographers and workshops led by members all over the world, bringing it to readers awareness and ultimately getting them to apply, attend or visit, is an essential part of the relaunch.

We created a practical visual calendar with options to filter by event type, location and photographers. On the event page itself, we integrated quick links to add to your calendar for a reminder,  open the location in Maps to visit, as well as booking.

The photographers' voice
Together, the photographers are the soul and backbone of Magnum.  It is again a key feature of the site for the photographers to have the necessary tools to promote their work for both their followers and for commercial opportunities.

Each photographer has a profile page, which they can populate and update: from a portfolio to their biography, news and updates, social channels, selected work, latest stories and publications.
